Biodegradation of Aniline Compounds and Enhanced Color Removal for Textile Dyeing Wastewater Through Cultivation and Immobilization of Intensified Microbial Strains in the Existing Wastewater Treatment Process

Aniline compounds, a group of toxic and mutagenic compounds, are raw materials for many commercial dyes in textile industry. PRC has implemented new stringent discharge standard that aniline compounds concentration down to below detection limit (i.e. 0.03 mg/L) in 2015. Most textile dyeing wastewater treatment facilities cannot remove aniline compounds effectively to meet the limit. Even though some textile dyeing factories have eliminated all aniline compounds discharge in the production processes, aniline compounds were still found in the effluent discharge. Therefore, applicable wastewater treatment method to removal aniline compounds is crucial for the textile industry. Microbial communities are the most important factors for biological treatment performance. However, it is a great challenge to control and enhance the microbial population in the biological treatment. Efficient treatment performance can be achieved by in-depth investigation of aniline-degradation and microbial population. Objectives To enhance the textile dyeing wastewater treatment through identification, cultivation and immobilization of specialized microorganisms for aniline compounds degradation and decolorization. Implementation approach 1. HKPC will collaborate with CityU to form a research team with Prof. Ian Thompson of OxfordU as External Advisor and the industrial dyeing specialist from Pacific Textiles to support the R&D work 2. 5 typical textile dyeing wastewater treatment plants to be used for evaluation 3. Analyze the microbial compositions in the 5 wastewater treatment plants by DNA sequencing 4. Identify specialized aniline-degrading bacteria and decolorizing bacteria in dyeing wastewater. 5. Enhance, enrich and immobilize the specialized microbial consortium in biological treatment 6. Set up pilot system with specialized microbial consortium and enhanced treatment scheme at Panyu factory of Pacific Textiles so as to demonstrate performance on aniline and color removal 7. Formulate the enhanced treatment scheme for textile dyeing industry
