Development of High Value-added Vortex Yarns and Fabrics with Enhanced Flame-resistance and Comfort

There are fast growing needs and new requirements for flame/heat protection for workers in various industries, such as petroleum and chemicals industry. However, current aramid or FR treated cellulose fabrics cannot meet these requirements. Therefore, this project aims at developing meta-aramid/FR viscose fiber blended fabrics for flame-resistance clothing with enhanced flame-resistance, comfort and pilling performance using a cost-effective mid-length fiber vortex yarn technology and specially-designed fabric structure. First, advanced mid-length fiber vortex spinning technology will be applied for producing aramid/FR viscose vortex yarns with very low hairiness and improved strength. Secondly, spinning trials will be conducted to study influences of fiber proportion and spinning parameters. Furthermore, based on the specially-designed fabric structure, weaving trials will be conducted for producing aramid/FR viscose blended vortex woven fabrics with enhanced flame-resistance, comfort and pilling performance. A statistical model will be established for predicting the relationship between aramid/FR viscose blended ratio of vortex yarn and the resultant fabric flame-resistance and thus for maximizing the blending effect of fibers as well as minimizing the fiber cost. This study is unique as it proposes a cost-effective method to develop meta-aramid blended yarns and fabrics. This technology will greatly promote the development of high value-added flame-resistance textiles.
