Removal of Indigo Blue Color in Denim Plant Wastewater by Macroalgae – A Preliminary Study

The consumption of textiles has been one of the fastest industrial trends in the past 10 years. Wastes related to textiles have become a great concern. Among the wastes, textile wastewater is a big environmental challenge. Denim manufacturing is one of the most important subsectors of textile industry, while indigo blue dye derived from indole is largely used. In this project, application of algae species for mitigating indigo denim plant wastewater is proposed. In essence, the aim of this project is to develop a post-treatment method for removing indigo blue color of denim plant wastewater by macroalgae with sunlight. The objectives are: 1. To select and use the proper macroalgae species for removal or degradation of indigo dye 2. To design and construct a laboratory scale water treatment setup with light collecting and transmitting devices for enhancing the efficiency of the process 3. To successfully remove indigo blue color of denim plant wastewater
