This project aims to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) smarting sorting system for efficiently manage the post-consumer textile waste. It includes an image-based AI smart sorting technology for supporting textile waste reuse and resale, and a material identification system for sorting textile materials by using Near Infrared (NIR) / Hyperspectral Spectroscopy to support efficiently upcycling to reuse the textile fiber. The process involved collecting and validating reference samples, apply AI technic to auto recognize the garment type applying visual technology, afterward, the sorted garments would be measured and pre-treated by NIR / Hyperspectral spectrum, and setting up parameters for matching spectral patterns for upcycling process recover the fiber. The goal is to achieve a robust and reliable method for sorting textile waste stream. Further to the success of previous ITF project “Upcycling and Processing of Used Mixed Blend Apparel into Fiber” (ITP/002/17TI), the proposed AI garment sorting and material identification system using visual process and NIR / Hyperspectral spectroscopy to identify garment type and textile materials quickly and accurately based on their characteristic spectrum. It is an applied research which can perform sustainable practice to recycle textile wastes.
