Decentralized Intelligent Platform for Made-to-Measure Mass Customisation

This project aims to develop a decentralized intelligent platform for made-to-measure individualized customization, on which designers, tailors or garment manufacturing SMEs, material suppliers, and consumers will be provided a number of online services supporting them to complete mass customization orders anytime anywhere around the world. This project is proposed in response to the changing consumer landscape and other challenges faced by the fashion industry, in particular SMEs, for the post-pandemic recovery. The new generation of consumers are mainly millennials and generation Z, which account for 64% of world’s total population, who have great spending power. This new generation of consumers are always connected with the digital world and do nearly every transaction online; they are concerned with sustainability, authenticity and with high ethical standard; they value experience and look for personal styles. On the other hand, fashion industry has to cope with many challenges, such as the long and fragmented supply chain, and therefore they actively invest in the digital transformation by re-designing their production and marketing strategies to meet the needs of new consumers. However, for SMEs, such as tailor masters and new individual designers, they may lack resource to digitally transform their business and address to the need for transparency, and thus SMEs are struggling for survival. This project will develop a direct-to-customer (D2C) intelligent service platform using advanced digital technology, including remote body measuring technology, intelligent auto-grading and blockchain technology to realize a cost-effective made-to-measure business model for SMEs. The proposed study is focused on developing (1) a web-based intelligent made-to-measure (iMTM) pattern design system and (2) establishing a decentralized online transaction tracking platform for mass customization orders using blockchain technology. The proposed platform can create a new business model of ‘Design by Hong Kong’ where individual designers can reach out to consumers around the world and also source manufacturers and material suppliers for their small order business. This platform also supports Hong Kong tailors to complete cross-border business online through a secured and trusty chain at a very low cost, serving customers around the world, collaborating with designers and material suppliers over the platform. The project also help preserve and revitalize Hong Kong bespoke tailoring business.
